. Pia Townes is a graduate of Johnson C. Smith University and East Carolina School of Medicine.
At Johnson C. Smith University, she earned a Bachelor Of Science degree in biology. Before graduating with honors, she joined Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She also participated in the Minority Bio-Medical Research Support Program (MBRS) sponsored by the National Institute of Health (NIH).
While pursuing her medical doctorate, she received two mini-fellow awards from the American Psychiatric Association and a Research Fellow Award from the North Carolina Governor's Institute on Alcohol and Substance Abuse.
After medical school, she completed her residency in Psychiatric Medicine at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, North Carolina. During Residency, she was awarded the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP) summer fellowship at NIH in Bethesda, Maryland. She also served on the North Carolina Psychiatric Association Executive Council as a Member-in-Training.

Upon completion of her studies, she devoted herself full-time to writing.
She is currently working on the next Dr. Sonya Robinson novel. She lives in Charlotte, North Carolina with her family and dog, Barkley.
